It’s Latin rather than Greek.
“A-Meri-Can” means “A Merry Can”.
Otherwise, it would mean “Not A Merry Can”.

Hmmm ... maybe you're right.
On the one hand, the outside isn't the bright red of a strawberry, and looks to me more like to reddish brown of a lychee. But on the other hand, that could be down to the colour limitations of the photographic film. Also, strawberries would be much more likely to show up in a New York fruit shop in the 1940s than a lychee.

If I’m not mistaken, she just ate a lychee, among the world’s most delicious tropical fruits, and probably very hard to get in New York.
No wonder she’s looking off camera with that “What miraculous thing did I just eat?” expression on her face.

Yes that's true. But inflation would mean that the same initial capital would buy 6.5% less every year.

It depends on what the inflation rate is. In the US, it’s 6.5% per annum. If you earned 4% and didn’t spend any of it, you’d still be effectively losing money.
However, if someone is at the end of their life, perhaps it doesn’t matter so much.

I worked with a woman from New Ireland, which is an island in Papua New Guinea. She said that the bananas they grew at home were spectacular, actually juicy, as opposed to the dry mushy Cavendish bananas the rest of the world was used to.
Since then, tasting a banana from New Ireland has been on my bucket list.
