I usually recommend airbnbs to people, as it can be a cool and immersive experience to stay in a home rather than a hotel, as long as you're not disruptive to the other residents. I'd recommend to look around Astoria because it's an easy commute to Manhattan and a lot cheaper than midtown. Other options are Inwood/Washington heights, Harlem.
