This is exactly how I think AI for art should be used: the person gets an image made, works as an editor to pick the best, then works as an artist to make a substantial number of edits to the piece so it's something new I'm the end.
The image would basically act as a starting point to jump from, like how concept art or "refined" thumbnails is used as the basis of things in all visual art forms. Or how people painting over old paintings works (my favorite was a person painting Smaug or some dragon setting fire to everything over a landscape piece of London)
Using images straight out the machine and attempting copyright- considering copyright is associated with making money- is where I disagree. In part from how it uses other artists work to make the image- it has to pull the visual styles from somewhere even if it's not copy pasting sections- as well as the fact that there's no human hand in its creation (prompts only count so far, because tons of people can use the same/similar prompt and end up with different finals)
(To me it's almost like pointing at something in nature and saying "I'm claiming this as solely mine, no one can have anything similar. I dont care if theres millions upon millions out there" when it's like a seashell or something pretty but dumb like that)

I suppose, though I usually don't partake in classics (unless scifi like Frankenstein or fantasy-esque like Dracula) because they don't peek my interest too much.
I think its mainly for me, I'm surface level when it comes to reading because I want an escape and only have my mind working on creative ideas for other works. I've never really felt drawn for deeper meaning or connection to like the outside world or philosophies or such and deep analysis to get to those always felt like homework to me. Something which is a minor stressor for me because of high absence as a child in school, I would end up with piles of homework when I got back.
I mean, I do enjoy researching (specific topics) but breaking things down was never one of the activities I enjoyed, even pre-absence issue

I HATED those classes. Thankfully the books we analyzed weren't ones I acutely liked to read so it didn't have a strong effect. They were mainly nonfiction or "realistic fiction" and I'm mainly a fantasy and scifi reader

Honestly, I read this way- I HATE when I'm asked to take things apart for "deeper meaning" and plan to write very straightforward with no hidden meaning because of it. (As in whatever I put is just cause I think it'll be cool for the story and not some fancy meaningful thing to analyze- like red curtains are red because i like red)

I haven't read many audiobooks (probably like 10 in all my reading years, 5 of which were recent), but the narrator for the Maze Runner series was like this. Albeit, his female voices weren't amazing, but there was never any doubt on who was speaking.
Now I'm sad I didn't really pay attention when listening who did them (I mean I can search later) so I can't give a name right this moment.

Coming out of the Maze Runner series, not so much speed, but scenes that feel relevant to the plot. Dasher had tons of slow times (the overall pace was slow compared to most) that didn't really feel like they were vital for character growth/change pr advancing the main plot.
I'm tepid when reading, so that's probably the only thing I need. I can sit with not great characters, or world building and such, but I feel like a book drags on if scenes don't feel significant to character growth or plot movement.

I rarely buy new for this specific reason, even like 5 years ago I always went "Oh I think I want this (the tsss inhale). Actually, maybe not" when I saw some of the prices.
I'll usually wait a few years and let 2nd hand stores drop them in price (newer ones are still full or 2/3 instead of the 1/2 or less older ones are) because rarely are there new books I go "I NEED this".
I mean, I've had some YA for YEARS I've been meaning to work through and those were very much "I NEED these" type books.
It's a bummer because I do believe authors should get paid, but at these prices (with barely anything going to them) I'm just not willing to risk getting a book I don't like, considering hardcovers I've gotten used at one point went $25-30 new. And they don't get anything from me shopping 2nd hand so thats a double sucky.

Reply to Pro-tip: If a well reviewed book has a Goodread's rating of around 3.5 then it's usually interesting by Proper_Cold_6939
I might be a weird one, but I don't usually look at reviews for whether to read or not. I mean, it might affect WHEN I read, but I'm usually set on reading the book when I get it. I also like to see where I fall with the book compared to other reviews so I usually try not to read or look at rating until partway into or finished with the book.
Also I rank a bit different- at least from the suggested list I saw someone share.
1- terrible
2- not good, but readable
3- "it's a book"/mid-level, nothing outstanding or overly memorable
4- (better, if in a series if 3 books) good/very good, something interesting about it makes it well worth the time
5- one of my favorites, would revisits multiple times/ unique in some manner
That being said, I've only ever given 2 books a 1 star (I had to read for school), with most being a 3 or 4 star rating.

Reply to When AI automates all the jobs what are you going to do with your life? by TrainquilOasis1423
I'm my ideal world, some jobs would exist for those who like to work (weird, but some people just like being good at their job); but people would have free time for creative things- ignoring the AI art stuff going on now.
Me personally, writing, painting/drawing and all the other art things under the sun would be my "work" to keep me busy- not too different from currently. I would say reading, tv and gaming also, but I go in waves with those where I just get too bored with it.
If AI could automate driving properly then I'd go hiking and into nature more (I have a license but driving terrifies me so i freelance from home); get more archery range time and practice for 'jedi skills'.
Kinda the opposite of what people would do I guess- since AR/VR and stay home seems to be a common thought process. I wanna say travel also, but considering many cultures have trades and work as a main part of their tourist culture many things would probably be lost with AI as very few would see the point in continuing a trade when AI does it already (save the few dedicated people who enjoy the process)

Not defending the language the person used, but I think for many it comes down to not being the target reading type despite perhaps being the target age group.
Some people REALLY like the "wattpad" writing style, or an extremely easy to follow low thought level book (if that's what you're describing as "lazy"). Others want more intensive thought provoking books and complicated stories that make them think and work, which I find sometimes lead to books being called lazy by those people when it's targeted for the less intensive type reader.
Objectively, books can be bad as a whole, but I think it majorly comes down to the type of reader- as you said, you dislike Hoover, while her popularity is high with others. So it's an obvious preference thing.
No answer to this question (being called a snob), as I also don't have any books off the top of my head i find "lazy", but did want to share my thoughts on the matter.

Reply to comment by DuurtMcguurt in How do you guys feel about ex library plastic jacket sleeves? by DuurtMcguurt
Oh I think that's definitely a region thing. You said you're UK?
USA libraries, at least the ones I've seen don't have anything super valuable like that. Ours are more recent books that are already mass marketed (I think a few have library special editions like Nancy Drew) so versions like that hold little value. All the older texts are either in a special area or they've been long gone by now- unless it's a college or large state library.
throwaway-clonewars t1_ixh7mar wrote
I personally don't care for them. I'm very much a "keep books pristine" type though, so it's the added card slot, the stamps and the plastic cover that annoy me.
That being said, I won't NOT get library copies if I'm looking for a book and that's the only copy I find, but if I ever find a better non library copy I'm for sure cycling that one out.
I have half the mind to repair old library books so they last longer, but I'm not sure it'd be worth the supply cost and time unless it was a rare or special version of a book (like there's tons of Dan browns, so no one would want a restored Dan brown when there's another like 10 at other thift stores.

I do have Dune and good omens on my list.
😂 I wish my mind would censor so it wasn't so obvious. I suppose it's a bit similar to people having trigger warnings on books where its not so much a trigger but they know thet wont enjoy it-for example my mom is fine with romance, but anything like bully romance or worse she can't stand. she HATED Zodiac Academy to the point she didn't bother finishing the first book because of the level past bully romance it was.
I've read a few where it wasn't a "in your face" thing the entire time, but it was extremely heavy handed for huge sections. I'm mainly reading ya scifi and fantasy since the handful of story ideas I have are all ya new adult types and common advice is "read a lot to write better".
It is definitely prevalent in those categories, though for some you have to squint a bit to see it's there.

I do dip out of those genres from time to time. Have you read the Essex Serpent? I believe thats a historical drama romance. I mainly grabbed it cause it has Tom Hiddleston on the cover 😂. Really not sure what to expect since I don't have apple either so I can't watch the show they made from it.

Interesting. I don't think many of the ones listed are to my interest sadly, but perhaps that just shows my wants are counter intuitive to the genre I'm reading in.
Guess it's a bit like asking for a pizza at a dessert bar. They'll probably have something called pizza, but it won't be the pizza I'm expecting 😅.

Thats interesting youve found it in thrillers also. Do you care about the romance or kinda just accept it as being an unavoidable thing?
I personally and working on 2 Scifi, an urban fantasy/paranormal, and a paranormal book where I'm making conscious decisions away from character romance as a subplot (not making any celebate by any means, im just not addressing any of it on page and leaving that to the read to decide if they truely care about assigning a sexuality or sexual experience level to them) because I find the lack of non romance annoying. I have friendship plots, which some will probably construe as romance, but I'm personally not writing with that being the intent.
Many of the books I've read are heavily obvious about it being romance and not friendship, which I'd personally rather read a friendship focused book over relationship drama.

I'm a collector type reader.
I have a huge personal library of thrifted books, but for specific series as of the moment I know the only way to read them is to check them from the library (looking at you star wars) as I usually dont want to buy them new unless I can get a discount and specific titles I've never seen in person or online in physical form.
I got spoiled on bag sales where I could get upwards of 20+ books tetrised into a bag and only pay $5 for it. I got nearly 300 if I remember correctly before they ended it for my area.
That being said I have so many that I've also concluded that I'll never read them all if I just read the physical, so I've had to start checking out audiobooks for the ones I want to read but aren't too invested in or high priority for paying attention. I've never really done audiobooks outside of when my classes would have them playing and we'd read along, so it's a minor adjustment.
I'll probably end up with a split of having read library checkouts and read frim my collection, while still owning all the physical copies (like the Maze Runner series. I'm listening on audio, but I have the physical books I'm annotating with little colored flags)

I can understand it to a point, mainly as an artist and writer. Personally, I'd have no issue with people using my works as inspiration or creating fan works/parodies/satire associated with either or using similar to almost identical character/creatures etc in my original works. The issue comes up though is association. Theres things I don't want to have my work associated with (namely politics/current issues) so copyright would allow me to limit those who might use it in such associations (if they're being jerks on purpose about it, purposefully going against my wishes).
Same with how disney is super on target with their copyright because they don't want anything not "family friendly" associated with their brand while they retain control. They do take thing rather far though to the "no one can" side which I disagree with- especially when (as it's happened before) they essentially use smaller creators as product testers then hit with a copyright claim and turn around to sell near identical products they had removed.
As for specific copyright of an image/book, if I make it and am selling it myself, I'd definitely copyright it becuase (while not the intention when making it) its a way to support myself and future creations. As much and common as people say "it's for passion/fun you should do it for free/give it away for free" the time and supplies ain't that so it's gotta be funded somehow. In that instance I wouldn't be ok with someone taking it and sharing it where I haven't myself done so- be it for attention (karma farming and such, considering its rare for people to back track to the original creator from posts if theres credit given) or "easy money" such as uploading on Chinese sites and losting for cheap to send out as many as possible (as often happens with popular artworks).
If I'm not selling it, I do agree that a copyright doesn't really make sense and is over the top to do. (Unless of course there's a legitimate fear some else would file a false copyright license and try to outright steal legal rights from me/the original creator- seen some horror stories of people with horrible exes who try this with work they made while with them)
All that said, I majorly create for myself and share so I often am not putting myself in a position for need to copyright. (I do have works I'm doing specifically to sell so those would be a bit more "this is mine, you can have if you pay", but as of the current everything has been for passion and thus I'm on the "feel free to use" side.)
