And if I may add, if you two come to MA - welcome!
Lastly, enjoy this political ad from 2018:

MA is trans-friendly. It's by no means perfect (no place ever will be), but you'll find support here. I live in Plymouth, one of the few places to have a Republican representative in the State House, and yet I pass multiple LGBT+ flags on my 3 mile commute. The oldest church in town (and oldest Parish in the country) flys the same flag.

If you care to travel all the way to Plymouth: Nelson Park in Downtown Plymouth is great. It has an inclusive playground, splash-pad, bathrooms and concessions stand, lots of grass for picnics, boat ramp, beach, as well as access to a two mile long rail trail that's great for walks. It's also close walking distance to everything downtown Plymouth has to offer: food, shopping, museums, etc.

Welcome! Glad you're making the move. You might want to check out Plymouth. It's the largest town by area in the state, so you'll have plenty of options, from small city, to cookie-cutter suburbia, to farmland. I live here now and I love it.
A million dollar budget can get you a great house. After a quick zillow search, I found a new construction, 4 bed, 4 bath, 3900 sqft, home for $979,000. And that was the most expensive.
Schools are great. I'm a product of, and a teacher in, the school system. Sports/clubs are REALLY big here. Lots of ways for your kids to be involved.
We're 35 miles south of Boston, with access to two MBTA (train) stops.
The downtown is like a small city: shops, restaurants, museums, etc. However, 15 minutes south of downtown is farm land. There are a handful of forest and nature preserves, too. Lots of hiking. Along with miles and miles of beaches, both public and private.
DM if you have any questions.

I work in a public middle school, it's not common though not unheard of. In my experience, in this profession, nobody cares: parents, teachers, administration, nor students.

There's a saying I heard about New Englanders: "we're not nice, but we're kind."

To piggyback off of this: I got married at an American Legion in Plymouth. For $1800, we got a room overlooking a pond (we would have gotten married on the beach if it didn't rain), seats up 180, a full kitchen, two bartenders, and plenty of parking.
The next cheapest place we looked was a golf course at $7500.
The money we saved we put toward an extra photographer and great catering.
No one remembers the place. Everyone remembers the fun, food, and photos
