I’ve heard many stories like this. Generally speaking if you are honest about what happened and act like a decent human being there is a good chance they will go above and beyond.

I managed restaurants and worked in retail for years. I was always more willing to help a kind customer than one that started the conversation in a rude or demanding manner. It’s not rocket science; most people will react the same way.

My guess is you clicked the link in the fake password reset text or email. After they captured your credentials the password was changed again and you were locked out of your account.
