Reply to People that post about Crime, what are you doing to help your community in the City? by Diela_N
A lot posts are obviously from people new to the city who had a scary experience and trying to warn people, ask about resources/reporting, thank helpful bystanders. Reddit probably isn't the best outlet and there are always asshats just bitching in the comments but everything doesn't need to be "here is my 5 point activism plan to solve safety concerns in the greater DC metro area"
That aside, this is also an insanely privileged take. A lot of people can't go to council meetings or volunteer because their health is poor or they're working insane hours just to make ends meet or have extensive caretaking responsibilities. They are still part of our community and still get a voice about how things should be.

It really depends on where you are. For some people it's an extra 15 min, for some people it's 2-3x longer than driving because you have to transfer, do the metro, etc. I like it but it really really really depends where you live.

Have you tried emailing them? I've had a lot of luck with that for a different embassy

No one wakes up and decides to be homeless for funsies. Some people "chose" homeless because of mental illness (paranoia, addiction) or because the path to shelter and stability is not realistic. This means they need more help, not less.

It sounds like they did some outreach beforehand, hopefully that encourages the remaining folks to get connected to help that get them inside eventually

The idea is you slow down before you get to the pedestrian area, like K St in Foggy Botton where people are just whipping though coming off the freeway.

You can go look up where they are. All the ones i'm familiar with are near high pedestrian areas. I don't even see any on on ramps...

I mean, you can look it up. People have even done overlays with safety data. They're around transition points to heavy pedestrian areas.

Don't read and comment on posts that you don't want to see? Upvotes and comments are how things get pushed out on this site

The cameras are there so people to slow down as they exit the freeway and enter a pedestrian area...

Reply to Car-Having Etiquette by woodscomma_elle
Are you suggesting places that are metro accessible? I've had car-having friends who were constantly suggesting places that had easy parking for themselves but were a nightmare to get to with public transport. In that situation, I either want a ride or we're going someplace else even if "but it's such a pain to find parking there!" Sometimes it worked to metro to the car having friend's place and they'd drive me to wherever.

This isn't really super meaningful when you look at their methodology. It's a huge list of factors and somewhat arbitrary weightings that aren't directly safety related. Like most people don't mean debt to income ratio when they're talking safety.

People help their community in all sorts of ways that aren't "attending council meetings" and "mentoring at risk youth".
