If those new particles serve to transmit sound, but don't cause aerodynamic drag or transmit other forces, then physics as we know it no longer applies and there's no way to predict what would happen.

How far can you two travel? Does the friend trust someone who lives at a different latitude? You could observe the changing tilt of the moon and which stars are visible from where. That's enough to demonstrate why a globe explains the most.

The number of currently active satellites orbiting Earth is on the order of 5000. If all those satellites were on the surface of the planet instead, which they are not, each of them would get an area the size of Cuba or Kentucky. The planet is big and space is bigger.
