I appreciate you are trying to get the lingo right and that's the only reason I want to tell you we'd say "where downeast," not "where in downeast".

If it were me starting to look from scratch I'd be looking at anywhere downeast of Bar Harbor/Acadia, in other words, I'd look at Washington County. Maybe don't rule out places a little further inland from the coast than what you circled in the other post.

I'm not giving you a hard time about your question because it's fine to ask a question like that. I wish I had an answer for you because it's a shame there are so few inexpensive options other than camping (which maybe you should consider) in the summer for people who don't have money to throw away but want to visit.

Have you considered looking up in northern Maine? There are more likely to be bargains in Aroostook County or at the lakes in central Maine or the mountains in western Maine. It's also beautiful and cooler than Philly up there, and you can easily do occasional day trips to the coast.

Most local groups in Maine post on local Facebook pages. Just generally speaking it's a good idea to be aware of the local pages even if you aren't on Facebook yourself. Just mentioning it because to someone who doesn't normally use it, it might not be obvious. Another source of local groups and activities are the small penny saver type local papers that run weekly listings. Most have an online presence these days. A google of the town or area you're moving to should bring these up.

It's all what you prefer, can afford, and can find. OOB is essentially a bedroom community for Portland. They're pretty close together. Portland has more resources for kid's activities like the Children's Museum, I guess, but the beach is ideal for a quick place to run kids around on. You'll be there the best months I think.

It's safe. Don't worry. Drive to work. It should take about 20 minutes, half hour. Culture depends on when your four months there takes place. It's a working class tourist beach town that is crowded and busy with a bit of a carnival atmosphere adjacent to the beach in the summer, not bad in fall and spring, and deserted in the winter. BUT, if you're fifteen minutes from the beach, none of that should affect you. A lot of people from Quebec come down in the summer so you'll hear French spoken on the street. Pine Point in Scarborough on the north end of the beach is a nice place to pick up a lobster roll for supper and eat it on the beach on summer evenings, less crowded than OOB proper and quite pretty. Ocean Park is a quaint community on the south end of the beach. I lived in OOB for a year and enjoyed it.

Hard for me to quantify & others might disagree, but where we used to have a day or two in the nineties once or twice a summer, I'd say it tends to happen more like three or four times and lasts for several days when it does. Fewer people get by without air conditioning of some sort now, where it used to be quite rare. I'm in southern Maine inland from the coast about 20 miles and bear in mind it's usually cooler on the coast than inland in summer.

Honestly, you're right, it probably won't seem that bad to you. The last time I went to Florida, I couldn't breathe for two days, it seemed so hot to me, and that was in February.

You are right that the last week in August tends to be less busy than the rest of August as more schools start earlier nowadays. First week of September is also not bad, Labor Day not withstanding. There is more activity in September than there used to be, things don't shut down after Labor Day anymore, but it does ease off some. Mid to late September before leaf season can be glorious or it can be a week of solid rain. Same with June. It's a gamble. July and the first three weeks of August tend to be hotter than you may remember and of course they will be busy and most expensive. But that may be worth it to you and what's hot and busy and expensive from our perspective may not be yours.

I'm not requesting a new flavor I just think it's pretty neat that a random comment like this could find the person who created the design. Maine is still a very small state in some ways.

Wells to Bar Harbor is a good 3+ hours in the summer. If you have to ask, you will probably find it's too cold to swim in July. Go in the late afternoon around high tide if you want somewhat warmer water.

Do you have standard offer for supply or do you have an alternate supplier that might have raised their rate without notifying you? If you do have an alternate supplier, you can change that. Check if there's a difference in that rate from December to January. This is different from CMP's delivery rate and is spelled out on your bills.

There are several on Facebook. I know people can be reluctant to use Facebook and god knows I understand, but it's really how small town Maine communicates. Luckily, it's easy enough to block the unpleasant people and just tune in to the positive ones.
