There are some economies of scale involved.. especially for high density displays,
The GPU does a lot of the heavy lifting..
But even simple-ish games often take multiple milliseconds of CPU time to simulate One frame, and that doesn't transfer to the CPU, so doubling the framerate means half the physics+gameplay+cpu calculation since you have half as much time to do it.

.and a CPU+GPU that can generate a full frame of AAA graphics in under 1 msec. Good luck w that. Same thing with apples "retina" displays. Yeah they are nice to look at.. but it's REALLY hard to feed a high res image at any decent framerate.
Doubling the frame size means quadrupling the GPU framebuffer size = 4x more horsepower to feed it.

Hehe all good bro. I didn't have "Talking about laser cutters with a China simp on the futurology sub" on my bingo card today, but here we are.
fwiw the one I looked at a couple years ago was an enclosed c02 laser, I think a k40.. but I don't even have a workshop, lol.
It wasn't on aliexpress.. it was some weird chinese factory..
I'll see if I can dig it up, and post back.

Yeah I thought about getting one of those cheap chinese laser cutters, but I was worried about getting my eyeballs burnt out since they have a questionable safety interlocks.. I read a few horror stories.. but I'll definitely hit you up if I'm in that market, u/SatanLifeProTips.

As good as possible = as visually similar to the original as possible (without close inspection), but way shittier and cheaper.
rocketing ahead = as they demolish their cities made of actual cardboard and sold to rural "investors" in a lottery involving free chickens.

Reply to comment by msbic in Why Functional Programming Should Be the Future of Software Development by fchung
Yeah I can see FP working really well for fintech.. in fact, it being pretty vital.
Mutable state is exponentially more risky when there's literal money on the line.. and it's worth burning cycles to ensure consistency and accountability.
My background is in games which has different incentives/constraints.
Just skimmed the article and as I suspected, it addresses neither of my questions.
Appreciate the response, and lol at the haskellers downvoting my question.
FP/Haskell has been the "future" of programming for over 30 years now, but in the majority of popular use cases, it turned out to be C/C++/C#/Rust/Javascript.
Not exactly the cold fusion of computer science, but not the iphone either.
cesium-sandwich t1_iy6sqa6 wrote
I didn't read the article, but do they address how immutability goes against the concept of caching? Also, FP relies pretty heavily on garbage collection, which has been one of my reasons for avoiding some FP paradigms in my work...

Pretty standard in the bay area if you don't want to live near an office park. It was also a reaally good job. But working from home making the same money is waaaay better.
