That was my thought as well. People that don't know much about LOTR or could care less about anything other than it being a fun story probably watch it.
From what I've seen, it is the people that grew up loving the LOTR books, talking to their friends about the lore, anecdotes about Tolkien and CS Lewis, WW2, Elvish...those are the ones that hate the series with a passion, but that group is probably pretty small.

Reply to LPT: Buy a bidet. by [deleted]
I want one, but I can't get past how 'medicinal' they look - like they should be on someone's 80 year old grandmothers toilet.
I need to look around. Maybe the design has improved since the last time I checked them out.

Reply to Demi Lovato poster banned by advertising regulator for being offensive to Christians by The_White_Light
Making fun of Christians was way edgier in the 80s and 80s when they actually held some sway over the culture. Nobody really cares now. It is way better to make fun of 'woke' liberals and me-too prudish Karens now.

Reply to USC School of Social Work removes term 'field work' because it may offend 'descendants of slavery' by wxcode
At this point when people say something is 'offensive' my natural reaction is to immediately dismiss them and put them in a bucket with the crazies.
This is unfortunate because there are actual things in the world that are offensive. On more than one occasion, I've found myself defending actual offensive words and actions because I am so used to crap like this and had to walk it back.

Wow. This is pretty awesome. In the 80s, rates got up to about 16%. Would be interesting to see the chart expanded to go that high.

I've heard this a lot in the context of news, but I don't know if I believe it.
You could say the same thing about words. Anybody can say anything online, but that doesn't mean you necessarily believe them. You cross-check their words with trusted sources and weigh what they say against what you believe to be rational and reasonable. I think people will just learn to do the same thing with photos and videos.
Plus there will likely be enough law suits around this to establish some kind of norm.
