Yeah, especially on iOS, since in the last few years they changed it so that 'turning off cellular' just disables the use of the data connection instead of actually disconnecting from the tower and shutting off the radio.

I hope they don't actually get rid of the airplane mode switch on smartphones. It's such a convenient way to shut off the radios when they are misbehaving and you need to, for instance, force the phone to re-connect to the cellular network when it's misbehaving.
