I think it helped that Chandon was a stock broker on Wall Street while writing the flick (or was before he wrote it, can’t remember). It adds an authenticity to how they talk, like how every one of the bosses doesn’t understand the technical shit hahaha

Absolutely love Margin Call. Over the years it’s slowly climbed up my list of most favourite movies. Really rewatchable and the dialogue is just exceptional.

That last line has gotta be one of the most succinctly sad and true things I’ve heard in a movie.

As a whole I really dug the flick. I think the biggest problem was that despite all the changes, Del Toro was still stuck with telling a story we’ve all seen a million times, and for the most part the story beats remain the same. Not much he could’ve done, just what happens when adapting something so popular. The songs were also pretty weak for the most part.

But hey, I’d still give it 4/5, so these are nit picks. I’d also hot take (?) and say it’s the third best Del Toro movie.

She was excellent, as was everyone (I honestly think Witherspoons performance is one of the great comic roles of all time).

Also, Election is just about the only movie where text on a poster makes me laugh harder than any spoken line. Whenever I see “Paul Metzler You Betzler!” I lose my shit haha

I know it’s too long to show to an editing class, but I still think the theatrical and directors cuts should be taught in film school as an example of the importance of editing in telling a story. Green’s character in particular goes from a whiny emo to a tragic heroine.

Phenomenal movie. Also touched my first boob in the theatre to it so it’ll always have a special place in my heart.

He’s one of my faves, yeah. Narc, The Grey, and Smokin Aces are some of the best films of the last 22 years.

He doesn’t always nail it, but I like that you can tell he’s always trying. He swings for the fences in enjoyable ways.

As others have said, he’s also a volatile dude who has burned a lot of bridges. His hero is William Freidken, and if Carnahan had started out the same time as he had, he’d be fine.
