I used it last year after a stroke. I had a case worker at the hospital get me the application and a doctor does need to fill certain parts out and sign, but once the application was in it took a little over a month and I started receiving payments. There is a number you can call and the people I spoke with were very friendly.

If the surgery will take you out of work at all then I see no reason you can't apply. It's an insurance you pay in to.

You know what, you're right and I'm not looking to argue a moot point. I still stand that those who have the means to live should reserve benefits for those who truly need it, but it's not up to me to decide who actually qualifies. I made a snap judgement from the pieces of information I saw, but if the powers to be determine they qualify for benefits, I won't argue lest I ever need help.

She isn't poor. She has 155k invested at 25 and is pursuing a graduate program. Can you afford that? I can't.

I absolutely believe in people taking advantage of benefits programs, who need them, and I'm happy to pay taxes that contribute to that. But I'm against benefits programs being abused by people who don't actually need them.

No, but they have 155k invested. If you lost your job and were going hungry, but had 155k in the market, wouldn't you pull some out to survive? But OP is choosing not to work and pursue a graduate program. Fine, but why should funds for benefit programs be used for them when they have the means to survive?

Don't quote me on this, but thinking back to the last time I collected benefits I was technically still employed, we just didn't have available work most weeks. When claiming benefits, I could honestly state I looked for work because I would ask my boss each night, if there was work tomorrow. No? Ok then.

So you are/were actively seeking employment there just won't be any for 7 weeks. I believe you can still collect.
