AWD; Impreza WRX. Does help with turning. Just use the gas pedal rather than the brake. Pulls you through the turn. FrontWD same deal but the backend wants to come around so studs help there. Winter driving dynamics are an interesting thing to learn. Almost suggest taking a driving class as its amazing the difference.

It's also not just icy hills but black ice thats often common. I was told that in AK it's a lot dryer and cold so salt isn't used as much, more snow on the roads, that negates the general need for studs

With Studs, you drive ice like snow. You steer into the skid and maintain some control. No studs....good luck.

That said, your other statements such as about AWD....well no since arguing known benefits. You probably still pump the brakes to stop in an emergency.

In all honesty, all seasons are not sufficient in harsh climates. Ok for occasional bad stuff down south, but in the north rubber has to be soft to shed snow and studded for our ice storms. I have Blizzaks on my 4wd truck which are not studded. They work OK, but don't hold a candle to the studded tires. I only have them as they came with the truck.

Don't forget Giffords as well. I was really disappointed with the VT ice cream scene. All I could find local was really expensive pints. I could get 2x round top for the cost of the typical vt ice cream.

Having lived in VT and ME, both have thier benefits. In VT i was considered a far right conservative because I liked guns and didn't support a lot of social causes. In Maine I am considered a progressive liberal because I like social change and I'm not religious.

I personally think VT is prettier and as a whole has nicer people, but Maine is more wild and being so big it's a craps shoot as to if the folks are nice or not. Also VT is easier to come from away as most there are actually from away making the transition easier.... unfortunately many have wealth and a NIMBY attitude in VT.

State govts, VT is more progressive with better social welfare and lower income taxes yet also has an awesome Republican governor. Maine....like the weather politics shift depending on the climate. That leads to economic instability that we have seen for decades.

Edit: Read some of the comments and damn there are some destructive people so understand at this point. It's too bad. So take what I say below as the perspective of someone who is nieve about idiots and a LNT minded person.

Posted signs were one of the few things that I actually hated about VT. Coming from ME they were few and far between so encountering them was always jarring. In maine there was a joke that you knew when an out of stater moved in. The for sale sign went down, no trespassing go up.

What I found frustrating is the law is the same. Open permission unless posted, and landowner absolved of liability.

Now I get no hunting, trapping or any sort of activity that damages or relieves a person of something on thier land.....but just blatantly posting land that is wild and never seen just seems stingy. I admit, i am one of the bad ones, I did trespass often but never hurt or took anything. I would often see a nice trek on a topo and go without regard for the 15-20 lands I would cross, especially if only one was posted. That said....it was usually once or twice a year, the posted signs were blank with no ownership so wasn't going to waste my time trying to figure out the owner if I was only passing through for 20min.

Maybe I should ask, why do you feel the need to post your land against all uses? Why not selective?

Um....It was a job I worked for a year ago. I worked the last 8 months for a different employer that was seasonal and ended and have a job lined up for the end of January. Apparently you don't understand how unemployment insurance works.

Maine is OK if you are in the right areas like brunswick, Portland, Orono, Midcoast or MDI, but they are very insular and dislike people from away, flatlanders. They like the tourist dollars, but not people from away. If you move into a town, better keep your head down, pay the high taxes, and live isolated if you dont....life is hell. If you try to get involved with town govt, or anything that appears like you are trying to change things you get enemy's. I actually had a mailbox and fence ripped down in front of my house when I complained once about needing to plow better. I learned then, never to bother.

I'm currently fighting an employer from a year ago in northern maine who lied to the dept of labor saying I quit. I worked for him 5 weeks as a seasonal passion job and my last day was 1 week prior to the end of the season. I got a CDL in VT and was planning on working for him again this summer. He lied again and said my VT license was not valid in ME. Needless to say he screwed my unemployment and now have to pay back $2000 to the lovely state of Maine.

This is one story of many I can tell. You want a hard life....try to make a living in Maine. VT might have high cost of living and few jobs, but at least the people are decent, the environment is pretty and the food is good.

As a traditional guide....yeah it works but do you know how hard it is to bring an egg into the bush unbroken, only to use it to make coffee that can be made a few different ways. Not to mention an egg is good tasty calories served with bacon...why waste it making coffee?

Personally I prefer the overarm spin method to force the grounds to the bottom of the pot.

Exactly, One of the things I love about Maine. I don't hunt, not that Im against it, just don't feel like butchering my kill as I have a weak stomach for such things. Though being able to wander the woods without worry is nice.

I do like Eastport, very close to Calais and seems like a lot of property for sale. We are pre-approved for about $350k to buy but don't want to go that high. Job requires me to be within 25mi or 30min. It is a community job, so will probably be involved in that regard no matter where I am.

My biggest worries are housing and internet. Both of those covered and I would be golden.

Um...keeping it a fair playing field and allowing all the fishermen to keep food on the table as best they can. Don't have the job yet, but it's my professional goal if I get it.
