On a practical career note, if this is a very big company like you say, internal transfers will be a possibility. Do your current job well, keep an eye on what they look for in tech support roles within the company.

On more of an LPT note, having solved the problem of getting a job, you are now faced with all of the other aspects of adulting that you were postponing. These can be legitimately stressful, even scary. Maybe talk to a counselor to help you get your bearings in your relationship with your girlfriend and with your parents. Not that I think you sound mentally ill, but some counselors also have expertise in normal but major life changes. It’s like a very professional life coach. Avoid those life coaches that are basically just fronts for pyramid schemes, though.

At a minimum, you need to agree around the things that one person in the partnership can’t have without the other person. For reasonably conventional marriages, kids are the key example. With home prices the way they are, home ownership may be another. Monogamy also seems like it fits the description.

Depending on your disposable income, it may be possible to have some dreams, like a sports car or a horse, that are personal treats that the partner doesn’t pay for or care about. With less disposable income, those things might crowd out essentials, though.

It’s still an active area of research, but quite possibly, yes. There are multiple chemicals involved that are being studied as endocrine disrupters and carcinogens. The background document at the link I posted goes into some detail.

The main chemical in perms, Ammonium thioglycolate, is also not great for you, but mostly functions as a strong irritant and sometimes allergen https://www.barbercosmo.ca.gov/forms_pubs/permwav_lfs11.pdf

Perhaps more importantly, though, perms are generally an option used for variety when they are in fashion. Even as a former fan of the perm, I haven’t had one since the ‘80s. Straighteners and relaxers have been treated as necessary for women of color with curly ethnic hair to be seen as professional and presentable. This means repeated regular use for decades.

If 80% of the population in a community has one hair type, every hairdresser will learn how to dress that type of hair. Not every hairdresser will learn to dress the various types that make up the other 20%. This is especially true if the 80% group has more money than the 20% group.

The products that will straighten hair and that will dye hair dark colors are extremely toxic. All women are under strong pressure not to have gray hair and women with curly ethnic hair are under extreme pressure to straighten it to be seen as attractive and professional. This is still true, but was even more true in the past.

That’s interesting to compare it to The Wire. They are similar in having 5 parts with very different qualities. Also, in people saying Part 2 is boring. It’s probably ill-advised, but I wonder if anyone ever dove in to write a comparison.

I read 2666 in Spanish, my second language. It took me forever (pandemic year) but I feel it was worth it because the writing was amazing.

There is a theory that the appeal of crime fiction to women is sort of an attempt to brace or prepare oneself for gender-based violence. If you are feeling less of that need for reassurance, that might make you less interested in reading crime fiction. This blog post talks some about these theories https://www.zoesharp.com/why-women-read-crime/?utm_source=rss&utm_medium=rss&utm_campaign=why-women-read-crime

Also, travel to and from the game would be a factor. People from multiple households probably spending an hour plus in a car together, unmasked, talking boisterously about the game, assuming / implying they are hoarse from cheering.

And because these connections weren’t being made in real time and communicated in plain language by local news, each game was incorrectly interpreted as evidence that it was just fine. Even my own husband was like “people are going to all these sporting events and it seems fine.” Shoulda made the NFL fund some test and trace.
