Is OP's "partner" a spouse? If not, their joint assets and joint debts could complicate a bankruptcy petition.

If it's not second nature after 10 years, it's not for you.

Per TurboTax individuals age 65+ and earning less than $14.7k (single) or $28.7k (married) may not need to file. https://turbotax.intuit.com/tax-tips/retirement/when-does-a-senior-citizen-on-social-security-stop-filing-taxes/L53Hx1v9W

But what's the pressing hurry?

OP should wait until he gets more information about the TSP which he admits knowing nothing about.

You should not rely on a quick refinance in the current market. You might want to see if you can get better financing from a bank or credit union, but a brand new 2023 vehicle does not seem appropriate under the circumstances.

I'd recommend getting a debit card with no foreign transaction fees (Schwab offers one) in addition to a credit card. The debit card eliminates the need for currency exchange as you can simply get it directly from an ATM with no fees.

You need to reduce your $800/mo debt payment before you consider upgrading your rental situation.

Wait and see if you actually like your job after the honeymoon phase and for your wife to finish her degree. You'll want more than two bedrooms if you're having kids.

I recommend checking out Street Easy.com to get a realistic sense of what apartments cost in NYC. $500k might buy a studio, but $400/mo for HOA is unrealistically low; you'd have to double or triple it. https://streeteasy.com/

If their take home is $60k, that means only $5k per month to cover all of their expenses, while also having enough left over to save. I don't see OP saving $200k or even half that in 4 to 5 years as the math simply does not work.

Your grandmother only died once and left behind one estate. That's what the IRS cares about in terms of the inheritance.

Reply to Buying a house next year, what’s a reasonable budget for mortgage payment? by ProspectiveHomeBuye
Your total monthly housing cost should generally not exceed 35% of your monthly income. You may qualify for more, but you will feel stretched.

This is a good point. If OP and their partner attempt to file for bankruptcy, the courts will expect that both parties will bring in income.
