My husband, youngest kid and myself lived in Rutland for 3 years, that was too long (2017-2020). We were lucky to take over the oldest kid's lease. Then, a year later it sold. We were lucky again to find another rental on the better side of town and more expensive. I paid them what I am currently paying for a house I purchased in NW Arkansas. It got to where businesses were closing and even trying to find decent paying work was a challenge. We finally decided to go back where life was more accommodating and cheaper cost of living. And, we have improved by leaps and bounds.

Best of luck and I pray you find the place you need to be.

Spent 3 years in Vermont....I learned it was NOT for me. Not enough diversity, too progressive liberal (Bernie Sander's back yard). Not enough shopping, you have to travel everywhere, winter is too long. Housing shortage, jobs are conflicting (unless you are college graduate and get lucky enough to score the 6 digit income to afford the cost of living).

But, the most evident thing about Vermont and it's people?Change for better is Not an option. Ignorance is not bliss, they have no clue what goes on outside of the state borders.

Guess what? Each state has their own sense of beauty.

My spouse and I lived in VT from 2017 to 2020. It was a hard struggle working (provided I could find work). I can't imagine what it would be like on a fixed income. Do you have more money than sense?

Also, VT is expensive; you drive to get everywhere and unless you're an outdoor enthusiast, entertainment venues/shopping is challenging and almost non-existent.

My husband and I realized 2 years ago at our ages at that time (60/55), we were not going to survive on a fixed income. We were not finding a home that we wanted to buy and the winters were getting too much for us.

And Rutland being on that list? Laughable. I learned in three years living there? Drug crime, homelessness, high cost and a "wanna be of culture".

Trust me, there are other places in the U.S. that has beautiful fall seasons that are much more affordable, better weather and more to do.
