Time, as we track it, is our own invention. We get to say what time it is somewhere. Is the time different place to place when we compare where we are to the sun and moon? Yes. But we set the time zones, which we do hour to hour, so differences of minutes don't make a difference.

Reply to ELI5: If universities all teach the same things, how come some universities are perceived to be better than others? by Ok-Journalist-8751
They may have similar courses (with some notable exceptions), its more a about who's teaching it and what kind of resources they have to teach with. Top universities bring in the top experts and teachers in the world, and have amazing resources to allow students to use top level equipment, tools, libraries, etc to facilitate top level learning. These schools are also usually conducting amazing research that even undergraduate students can often participate in, accelerating their careers. When a university has all these things, they gain a good reputation, allowing for students to find easier and better jobs upon graduation. That alone makes a university "better" in the eyes of most.

I would have to be at least 10 to understand this, and I have the IQ of an 8 year old.

Reply to eli5: Who does the US owe almost 32 trillion dollars of debt too? If it’s the most powerful nation in the world, can’t it just get rid of it? by brybry0812
It's a fairly complex issue. A lot of the debt is owned by Americans or american companies. Many of the holders are our allies, like Japan and Belgium. By suddenly removing it, many of our friends both inside and outside of the US would be hurt. This would also hurt our reliability. Who would want to work with us or buy our future debt if we did this?

Reply to ELI5: If the chemical dopamine stimulates a 'feel good' sensation, is there a chemical that makes us angry? by Kree_Horse
I'm not sure about the cause and effect, but epinephrine and other chemicals that are released by the adrenal gland are elevated when you're angry. Some emotions are caused not by chemicals, but by the lack of them, like depression. Anger may be the same. A lack of serotonin can cause irritability, that could easily lead to anger. Anger is associated with the flight or fight survival response, which is why the adrenal gland is involved.

Reply to ELI5 How do MMORPG Games have the same armour models fit all characters when the heights and models differentiates a lot ? by ErieeKo
Imagine you made a bunch of dots on a person, all over their body, and you assigned each dot a number. Then you did the same thing to a set of armour. You put the armor on the regular sized person so all the numbered dots on both the person and the armour lined up. Then you could make a person bigger or smaller, but the dots would remain in the same relative locations, by effect shrinking and growing the armour. Sometimes, an artist would review how the armour grew and shrunk, and make small custom adjustments to make sure it looked good.
This was basically how it was done in the late 90s and early 2000s when mmorpgs were just starting to come into their own. Theres more complicated methods that have been added onto this basic method to make armour look even better and change shapes even more, but that's far beyond the scope of this sub.

Reply to comment by atuljinni in Eli5: How does forced religion conversion work? by atuljinni
That's a much more complicated question. To give the shortest possible answer, the new religion usually incorporates aspects of the old one, sometimes on purpose, like Christmas (pagan festival of lights) to ease the transition of conversion. The threat of death can also be very compelling. Each example in history was a bit different, so its difficult to provide a good answer.
Hefty-Set5236 t1_je8qphh wrote
Often times the penalty for not following the new religion was death. Most would fall in line, some would not. Of those who did not, some would get caught and some would flee to an area where they could freely practice the old religion. After a generation, the cycle would continue. Some would convert, some would get caught, some would flee. Over the course of generations, this would eventually lead to very few people still secretly practicing the old religion. In other cases, many followers of the old religion would simply be rounded up and killed before they knew to hide, similar to what happened to the jews under nazi rule. As this is one of the largest and most recent examples of religious purification, reading up on this history could provide you with a more detailed answer.

My understanding is that they regurgitate (vomit) up the consumed food after the competition has ended. They also don't compete on a daily, or even weekly basis, for the most part.

Codependency is when you become reliant on another individual, or individuals for basic functions or emotional needs. This is unhealthy because over reliance can lead to not developing necessary skills (literally and emotional). When those individuals are taken away, either by death, a break up, moving, or another reason, the codependent person can no longer function. We all rely on others, but by over relying it can lead us to a greater struggle down the road. Its important to build basic skills, including emotional ones, even if you expect to always have people in your life.

Reply to comment by Nosferatu-87 in ELI5 Why are Humans the only species that have developed sentience/self awareness on earth? by corkscream
It's even been theorized that certain animals, like whales, may have a higher aptitude for certain attributes we consider to be human, like emotion and empathy. This is because although human brains are large and dense, certain regions of our brain aren't as developed or active as whats has been observed in some animals.

I didn't know that! My grandpa also destroyed everything from the war and never talked about it, except to his father who has long since passed. I don't know why this wasn't destroyed, perhaps for religious reasons or maybe he just forgot. Recently uncovered it in an old storage container.

Bail is the dollar amount set by a judge after someone is charged with a crime. If that person pays the bail amount they are free to leave the jail. The money is returned to them when they return to their scheduled court date. A bond is issued by a private company when a person cannot afford the full bail amount. The money is still returned to the person when they make their court date, but the bondsman keeps 10%. Tldr bail is the amount set by the judge, the bond is a loan.

Reply to ELI5 why/how strong wind causes wildfires in Colorado by Antique_Work_3852
Strong wind can bring down electrical poles and other infrastructure that can spark, or carry sparks from a bonfire or other man made fire. The main issue with winds and fire is preexisting fires being accelerated by wind. The wind fuels the fire with more oxygen, and spreads the fire allowing it to consume more fuel (vegetation) on the ground. It also makes the fire more unpredictable and difficult to control.
