I have a background in suicidology and talked about something like that briefly. The concept of “suicide awareness” is a bit misguided as people are not aware of issues within their community, not on a national level.

In a survey, people estimated that 20 percent of the population has attempted suicide. It’s actually five percent. But 40 percent said that they personally know someone who has.

Three percent of the population has green eyes. I seriously doubt that 60 percent of people will say that they don’t know anyone with green eyes.

I wasn’t talking about Communism, just sharing information about similar authoritarian regimes.

Yes, Pol Pot was communist and Leopold was capitalist. The issue is that they were both authoritarian, not their economic system.

I’m a special education teacher and I’ve heard that joke from students but it was about people thinking that the boy was stupid because he was in special ed.

I was involved with a suicide prevention committee at one point despite having attempted four times. I do nonprofit work in education now but am transitioning back to suicide prevention next year.

I got some flak for it but I have a sense of humor though so usually my friends or I are the ones making the jokes. It did hurt when I got called “worst committee member” by a colleague though. My case is totally different because it’s a medical issue, not a criminal case though.
