Concert tickets aren’t really a great gift IMO, especially if you don’t really know the person that well. It assumes a lot of things: that they’ll be free or able to get time off work to go, that they’ll actually enjoy the show, and that it’s somewhere they’d want to see a band.

Don’t sweat it. My wife is a choral teacher and she frowns upon my taste in metal simply because she can’t fathom how people scream like that without destroying their vocal chords. I try to tell her there’s specific vocal techniques just as with any style of singing that alleviates some of the damage but she just ain’t having it.

So she really won’t tolerate my love of Dying Fetus when she’s around. Just as well - I wait till she leaves for work and blast it and thrash around the living room instead.

It’s not so much a genre but an instrument - the handpan is a beautiful and soothing instrument and you can find it in tandem with all kinds of other instruments. My favorite combo so far is handpan, bansuri flute, and acoustic guitar as presented by these fine gentlemen.

I’d also highly recommend checking out Malte Marten and his handpan duo Yatao for some ultra chill vibes.

Phish had all kinds of hilarious stage antics during their early tours and throughout the 90’s. It started with secret musical signals that were hidden in songs and pulled out at random where they’d suddenly launch into something like the Simpsons theme. Then there was the vacuum solo that Fishman would play throughout their career. Then the whole Gamehendge saga which was a detailed storyline with themes and characters woven through numerous songs that they only played in its entirety a handful of times. Then there were the Halloween traditions of covering famous albums in full as a “musical costume”, and the NYE tradition of 3-4 night runs at Madison Square Garden where some of their most legendary performances occurred. And all through the 90’s each decade’s tour took on an improvisational theme, so 91-93 were the secret signal years with short and fast performances/blistering solos, 94 was the bluegrass tour, 95-96 started seeing some extended improv that took songs to a completely unfamiliar place, 97-98 were porno funk, and 99 was the deep space tour which they capped off with the millennium NYE concert where the last set played continuously from 11 pm - 7 am.

Lots of great stuff to unpack there if you’re interested, if not please disregard.

The Aristocrats w/Primuz Chamber Orchestra

This is hands-down the most innovative, unique, inspired, and engaging album from start to finish I’ve heard in a very long time. The Aristocrats are a badass 3-piece prog-fusion trio in their own right, but after coming across a video of this Polish orchestra covering one of their tunes, they connected and recorded this masterpiece. The string arrangements are truly next-level and they sound as though they were specifically composed for this music, not simply placed on top of it like many others that are added later.

And for a personal plug - I’m a drummer recently turned guitarist/bassist/producer/songwriter and I’ve been on a wild journey to expand and refine my musical worldview, including learning theory basics and pushing myself to creatively express with new instruments. Here’s my first attempt at a full-length album of 10 originals written, performed, and produced by me with a couple collabs and a cover featuring my wife’s lovely singing. There’s tons of mistakes and blemishes but I’m rather proud of it and I learned a ton throughout this process.
