That area isn’t bad at all. Most of the crime is stolen packages, car break ins, etc. That section Whalley by Blake is pretty brutal with public drinking, loitering, etc., so I wouldn’t plan on walking with the fam by there. It can also get fairly noisy from traffic and the occasional roving dirt bike brigade. You can get a better sense of specific crimes from the city’s website.

I know they’ve had a lot of turnover in the kitchen staff since the pandemic but I always find it an unpretentious, easy going place to have some drinks.

Maybe. Gastropub makes me think of some upscale place, which def isn’t three sheets.

I’d hardly call three sheets a gastropub. It’s a great local (and locally owned) bar!

Supposedly it’s the minerals in the water that influence the dough, might not taste the same in Ohio.

How is it? Tavern on State is good but that spot on Front Street has had a lot of turnover.

Splash car wash has a two locations in town and generally does a good job but I think you need to schedule a detail.

Bike commute is a tough one in this area to get to a cheap gym. For a fairly modest amount of money you could buy some weight to sling around.

The general disregard for traffic laws, by other divers, bicyclists, pedestrians (including Yale students). etc, is pretty bad.

Garage space, especially in East Rock, is at a premium. Aside from the extra expense, riding in New Haven can be pretty hazardous, especially for a novice. I gave up my Harley because the risks outweighed the benefits.

The overwhelming majority of legal gun owners are not people I’m afraid about. In the world you you’re suggesting, the illegal guns would still be out there. Nothing would have changed it that regard.
As for weed, I very rarely made strictly marijuana possession arrests. The right to marijuana also isn’t in the bill of rights. Weed was always an easy way to search a car looking for something else like illegal guns. Personally, I think most drugs should be legal, but that’s a different discussion.

Yeah, you’ll be fine. New Haven can be a pretty violent city for its size but if you’re not looking for trouble and are reasonably cautious you’ll be good to go. And if you’re into beer, there’s a bunch of good local places. Enjoy!
