Are you suggesting, that if a division within a company is not successful or a group is overstaffed, a company should not fix their business plan?

'banning books'
Not saying I agree with what they are doing, but give me a break. That's an incredibly misleading way of saying what's actually happening, which is removing books from public high school and below institutions which they deem as inappropriate.
That is significantly different from 'banning books'. This sort of stupid take is ironic considering your agreeing with someone who just said 'We need basic problem solving and critical thinking skills'.
The lost nuance in conversations like this is exactly the problem. Arguments these days have the depth of bumper sticker zings.

They have to pay their employees more. They have to pay more for their equipment/trucks/gas/everything else. Inflation impacts every industry.

But you should think about that for a moment. Why would this appease shareholders? Do you think they just get off on companies firing people? Or do you think maybe it has to do with a cost/benefit analysis? Microsoft didn't destroy their VR/AR team for fun, they did it because financially it wasn't paying off. Same for Amazon's Alexa/Devices division. 'Appeasing shareholders' is another way of saying downsizing areas with low ROI, which is exactly what a healthy business should be doing.
