He didn't threaten to, or shoot up the govt. Mental illness isn't a crime. He hasn't made great choices, but unless I'm missing something, he isn't criminal.

I couldn't say for sure, I'm not there. And mental health services and funding are severely lacking globally. Just the fact that the issues are out in the open, and no innocent bystanders were harmed, and authorities are aware of this man's situation and line of thinking is a step forward from what could have been, that's all.

I am glad they are found, and safe. It reminded me of a similar Australian family incident from 2016. Mental health is a fragile thing. Look after it, and look out for your friends, family and neighbours.
