In other news, water is wet.
I hope Bolsonaro's asylum in the US spurs at least a couple people to reflect on our history of aiding, abetting, and providing comfort to South American dictators and war criminals. I'm shocked that Trump hasn't reached out to offer him a cabinet position in his next administration.

Are they the "Jews for Jesus" ones or are those a different kind?

In a roundabout way, special provisions on damage to places of worship is a way of ensuring equal religious protection under the 1st amendment.
Hard to argue otherwise in this case considering it's a synagogue.

They accused me of being a Russian bot, more or less.
As for Capone, it's a bit relative. He died shortly afterwards, but that was probably due to untreated syphilis (as was the fashion of the time ;) He only served 8 of his 11 year sentence and lived another 7 years afterwards.

Nice reading comprehension bro. By your logic I guess I'm also upset that they busted Al Capone? 🤔
Why don't you direct that outrage to the fact that our politicians have made it so that 700 million dollars in money laundering apparently has a maximum sentence of 5 years?

From the article:
> Bitzlato did business with customers in the U.S. and its employees advised users that they could transfer funds to American banks. Legkodymov allegedly led the exchange as its senior executive and majority owners from Miami since 2023. He faces a maximum of 5 years in prison if convicted, but federal authorities on Wednesday stressed that the investigation is ongoing and additional charges could follow.
That's where he screwed up. Even so, the US government has very limited jurisdiction, as he is not a US national and most of his company's criminal activity is extraterritorial.
On paper his maximum sentence looks to be even lighter than Al Capone getting caught on tax evasion.

An article from this fall, from a professor in Singapore (i.e. not knee-jerk pro-Chinese government), states that China has been implementing a number of policies to change its fishing industry. Pretty interesting stuff if you care about the world's overfishing problem:
https://www.eastasiaforum.org/2022/08/03/chinas-efforts-to-reel-in-overfishing/
The territorial waters discussion is a bit of a red herring (haha), but if countries were to put limits on fishing imports it would certainly have an effect. Three quarters of US seafood is imported, and its biggest import source is China.

I'm responding to your comment about "suppressing Republican votes," and how there's nothing new about Republicans suppressing Republican votes as a means of suppressing even more Democratic votes, even if only in theory and it potentially backfiring.
Not sure what you are confused about, but this conversation feels like it's kind of going in circles. Take care buddy .

Not really, recent data shows that more Republicans have died from Covid than Democrats. So plenty of Republican policies have already led to the suppression of Republican votes to a permanent end.
To be serious though, vote suppression for Republicans has similar logic as running attack ads--it brings votes down for both candidates, but on the whole the net result favors your side.

It's not setting a precedent at all; it's a continuation of the same Republican rhetoric and tactics around voter suppression that they've been running on for over a quarter of a century.

Funny enough, the January 8th 2023 failed "insurrection" to reinstate Bolsonaro was practically a redux of January 6th 2021 in the United States in every measurable way. I'd be happy to entertain any examples from recent years of things flowing in the other direction though.
