In answer to your first question, no, he wouldn't tell me. I even offered some possible answers, to which he would neiher confirm nor deny.

Anyways, your point about lighters not being as accessible is a really strong possibility as to why it's not done anymore. On the other hand, I provided only one example from one kid—which isn't exactly representative of the entire generation. Maybe it is still being done, but nobody talks about it?

Update: My 18yo Gen Z son tells me that nobody does this anymore

He turned out to be a manager at a manufacturing company, a Harley-Davidson owner, an amateur guitarist, and an avid outdoorsman :)
