New England seems to be about old stuff especially with a maritime background. I’d start in Mystic CT for the ships and aquarium and then into Newport RI. Newport has everything from the restaurants, cliff walk, beaches, mansions, harbor cruises, to Fort Adams to shopping. Then hit Providence for Brown University/RISD Museum/East side/Wickenden St for perfect vibe of old Ivy League mixed with young energy. Downtown try PPAC and more restaurants. I’d then skip Cape Cod because of summer traffic and head to Boston MA Too many things to list but it started the Revolution so packed with history. Then I’d head to Portland Maine to end with a relaxing few days with more memorable food, shopping, and shoreline.

In the 90s I lived on Benefit above Geoff’s Sandwich shop for 3 years. I had a top floor 1 bedroom apartment with a fire escape. The view was phenomenal. Best part though is I could walk into the city for live music, up to Thayer food and just wander aimlessly through the streets of college hill. I would move back in a heartbeat.

The particular cliff is about 8 feet high and only a few seams have fossils. I recall a layer about 4 foot level. It’s crumbly so fingers only can help tell whether it’s worth exploring. I do use a thin putty knife to carefully pry out layers. But I also enjoy just beach combing the area for shards that have already eroded away.

The only consistent place I’ve found fossils is in shale cliffs at end of Cory Lane in Portsmouth. At the water, head right for a few hundred feet at low tide and plenty of Carboniferous fern fossils in the layers.

Persimmons on east side is hands down my favorite fine dinning restaurant. They do a tasting menu to die for. Since my wife is vegetarian she orders the veg. Tasting menu while I get the regular one. It’s not inexpensive but for the money it’s a memorable date night.

I used to do a lot of fossil hunting along the whole western side of Aquidneck Island and the Cory Lane site was the only place I found with fossils still in situ in the cliffs. At low tide, park at the end or the road near the tracks and head right about 1/4 mile? It’s a 10 foot tall cliff of shale with many layers crumbling - some have fossils. The loose shale around this site also has them. I was finding almost exclusively Carboniferous ferns (about 300M yrs).
