US already has more than one car per licensed driver. 2 per couple is already the norm.

Reply to Are people with autoimmune diseases less likely to get viral infections? How about cancers? by Selfeducated
Females more often get autoimmune conditions, and are less susceptible to many viral infections. So very loosely yes.
But given that the treatment for autoimmune diseases is immunosuppressive, and that increases infection risk, it’s complicated.

Mitochondrial Eve was NOT the only living female at that time. Every other mitochondrial line ended, but they still could have had sons.

That’s not true. Australian aborigines have been isolated for something like 50 ky.
EDIT: this is now known untrue. Thanks /u/Octavus!

The one that goes, “There’s a place called France where the naked ladies dance”? It was made up for the 1893 Chicago World’s Fair.

Philip Cohen the sociologist, who is generally pretty pro-poor, eviscerated that book on his blog. Her findings are implausible and her methods suck. (And she has BO and her mom is fat.)

Reply to In what ways do sperm change as someone gets older? Or will a 15y/o produce basically the same offspring as a 60y/o (disbarring fertility issues) by licking-windows
In addition to the longitudinal changes already described, there’s also a selection effect. Fertile 60-year-olds are not a random sample of fertile 15-year-olds: they’re likely genetically predisposed to longevity and healthy aging. So you’d expect children of a 60-year-old to outlive those of a 15-year-old, holding all else constant.

Reply to Can Elks get depression? Are there many studies that explore sadness in mammals? by Somebodynobody29
Depressive symptoms (8 of the 9 on the standardized questionnaire: hard to assess suicidal thoughts in animals) can be induced in animals. Would be an astounding coincidence if the same situation that caused those symptoms in humans, didn’t also cause depressed mood.
(Situation is helplessness/ unavoidable punishment.)
